Morristown firefighters quelled a kitchen fire before it could spread through an apartment building Friday afternoon.

“We knocked it down in five or 10 minutes,” Fire Chief Robert Flanagan said of the blaze in Manahan Village, near the Morristown Neighborhood House.

There were no injuries, Flanagan said. The family residing in the ground level unit of Building 6 was not home at the time. An uncle of one of the residents was walking outside, saw smoke and reported the fire around 2:30 pm, the chief said.

The apartment sustained significant smoke damage; the family will stay with a neighbor until it’s cleaned up, Flanagan said. Fortunately, he said, other units in the building were largely unaffected and remain habitable.

Flanagan said the fire’s cause appears to be accidental, involving something left on the stove.
