East-bound traffic was restored shortly before noon Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, on South Street between DeHart Street and the Morristown Green, according to police, who advised that more closures are possible as utility crews repair a gas leak detected overnight.

Motorists were detoured during the morning commute when that stretch of the state roadway, to West Park Place at the Green, was completely shut down.

The leak is deep below the street, in the vicinity of the Blue Mercury store, Mayor Tim Dougherty said.

Thousands of pedestrians are anticipated Sunday on South Street, for the annual Morristown Festival on the Green, rescheduled from last weekend’s nor’easter.

“Hopefully, repairs will be completed today,” Dougherty said on Friday, praising police, the state Department of Transportation and Public Service Electric & Gas for their responses.

A PSE&G spokesperson said repairs are expected to wrap up on Friday. No details about the cause of the leak were immediately available.

Morristown firefighters were dispatched at 1 a.m. in response to reports of a gas odor outside the Iron Bar, said Fire Chief Robert Flanagan. An hour later, he said, they handed off the scene to crews from PSE&G.

Police issued their first alert at 3:34 a.m., advising motorists to avoid eastbound South Street approaching the Green. The full roadway closure was announced at 7:02 am.
