Talk about tasty Grand Openings!

Morristown’s Café on the Green, at 28 West Park Place, is offering free gelato today, April 28, to celebrate its official opening.

We highly recommend the chocolate-peanut butter creation, whipped up by Pastry Chef Amanda Beun and brought to our attention by head Chef Chris Nguyen.  Both came to the Café via the Hilton Short Hills.

Formerly home to a Godiva chocolate shop, the Morristown space now welcomes visitors with a ceiling-mounted, working Lionel train set. Colors are bright and cheery, with a back parlor that feels almost like a playroom.

It’s the baby of John and Vita McGloin.  Or rather, their second baby. Little Mila Ann arrived 4 ½ months ago; the Café on the Green came along in March.

John’s background is working for opticians; when he wanted to start a business, Vita, a computer programmer, opened his eyes.

“He wanted to do something, maybe a sports bar,” she said. “But with bars there are too many late nights, fights, liquor licenses….I said, ‘What about a gelato shop?  It includes everyone, it’s happy. To survive in winter,  we can be a café. And it’s awesome décor!'”

Saturday’s ceremony had some special guests, including Morristown First Lady Mary Dougherty, standing in for Mayor Tim Dougherty at the ribbon-cutting, and local singer Kate Barnett.

But the prize for longest distance traveled goes to Vita’s mom, Ona Bilotiene. . . who came all the way from  Lithuania.

Give that lady some gelato!
