Summer isn’t slipping quietly out the back door.
Greater Morristown sends it packing this Labor Day weekend with parades in Boonton and Mendham, fireworks in both towns, carnival rides and a Riverdale street fair. For indoor fireworks, Edward Albee brings marital combat to Madison in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, while improv, folk music and Orpheus add lighter notes.

The Boonton Fire Department opens its four-night Labor Day Carnival from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., with midway rides by Blue Sky Amusements, food, games and prizes, a beer garden, a Super 50/50 raffle and live entertainment. The Mendham Township Historic Preservation Committee presents Mendham Township — In The Beginning at 7 p.m. Vice Chair Sam Tolley will explore the township’s early history, from the Lenni Lenape through English and Quaker settlement and Mendham’s first breakup with Randolph, along with the origins of the Mendham name. The Morris Museum presents Orpheus Chamber Players: Night Revels at 7:30 p.m., with an Orpheus Chamber Orchestra wind quintet serving up an evening of dance, storytelling and music spanning Beethoven and Dvořák to Valerie Coleman and Paquito d’Rivera. Mendham Borough kicks off its Labor Day Carnival from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Mendham Borough Park. The carnival continues Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.The big finish comes Monday, when the Mendham Labor Day Parade marches up Main Street to Borough Field at 10 a.m.. A fire hose competition featuring local fire departments follows the parade, along with a concert at noon, while the carnival runs from mid-morning until 9:15 p.m. That’s when the mayor draws the winning 50/50 raffle ticket and the fireworks begin. The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey previews Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at 7:30 p.m. Marriage on the rocks, indeed: Two couples collide over one volatile night in Albee’s darkly comic, brutally honest examination of marriage, illusion and the stories people tell themselves to survive. Saturday’s performance is pay-what-you-can; regular tickets are $45-$85. Recommended for ages 15 and older. The Borough of Riverdale turns the Newark Pompton Turnpike into a giant block party for its annual Labor Day Street Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect arts and crafts, vendors, live entertainment, kiddie rides and games, demonstrations and more than 15 food trucks and food vendors. A special kids area in the school parking lot features bounce rides, slides, interactive inflatables, face painting, sand art and games. Admission information was not provided.
