For generations, Morristown High School football has been a Saturday afternoon ritual of autumn.

But fans can get their football fix early this weekend.

The Colonials host the Cougars of Columbia High School at 2 pm this Friday, Sept. Sept. 29, 2017.

The game was moved from Saturday afternoon when parents pointed out that the original kickoff time would have conflicted with the Yom Kippur holiday, which runs from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday.

“Both schools scheduled it without realizing it was Yom Kippur,” said Rose Piccolo of the Morristown High athletic department.

The holiday falls at different times each year, based on the lunar calendar.

Leonard Posey, president of the Morris School District board, said he received a couple of calls from the community alerting him to the conflict.

“We try to be respectful when we schedule athletic events,” Posey said.

Both teams are hoping the shift brings them luck: Each is winless in three tries so far this season.
