Town planners on Thursday gave the planning board its first look at proposed revisions to the town zoning master plan.

Chairman Joseph Stanley appointed three board members to review the plan in greater detail, and scheduled a public hearing for Dec. 5, 2013. Adoption of the document is anticipated on Jan. 23, 2014.

The master plan has been shaped by town-wide planning sessions held between October 2012 and April 2013, and by ongoing public comments at MorristownMovingForward.com.

“Our vision is Morristown moving forward to become the most welcoming, beautiful, healthy, resilient and sustainable place to live, work and play in New Jersey,” according to town planners.

A draft will be released to the public on Nov. 15, and the first public meeting of the long- range planning committee will be held in early December.

Details promised at future hearings included:

  • Locations of permitted uses and desired neighborhood character
  • New land uses such as light manufacturing and live/work uses
  • Downtown building heights
  • Neighborhood transitions
  • Neighborhood centers, schools, and community centers

Areas singled out for future discussion were the Morristown Green and surrounding area, the train station, Speedwell Avenue, South Street and Washington Street.

The state requires towns to update their master plans every 10 years.  Goals include supporting community efforts to participate in capital budgeting, resource allocation, and planning and development decisions. The revised master plan also is intended to streamline and strengthen permitting, compliance review, and code enforcement processes.

  1. The “Moving Forward” tag for Morristown is a copy of Obama’s tag line, which is also a copy of CNBC’s tag line. Is Morristown so politically tied to Obama that it can’t think for itself, or is Morristown just a branch of the liberal left?
