The Bernstein Centenary
March 10 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm$10
The Masterwork Chorus, led by Music Director Chris Shepard, will mark the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein with The Bernstein Centenary, a buoyant and joyous concert of his most iconic music, at the Chatham United Methodist Church, 460 Main Street, Chatham, on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 7:30 pm.
The all-Bernstein concert will include excerpts from West Side Story and Candide, with selections from Bernstein’s seldom performed Mass. Bernstein wrote Mass at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy to open the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971. Bernstein’s Mass, with Latin text from the traditional Roman Mass and additional lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and Bernstein himself, is a contemporary blend of rock, pop, and music from the concert hall, and includes Bernstein’s own fervent sung prayer for peace.
Matthew Anderson, who has performed the tenor solos with Masterwork in Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall and at Ridge PAC, will bring his expressive voice to the tenor role in Mass. Boy soprano Jack Wallace will also perform. Accompanying the chorus will be Masterwork’s own pianist Carol Walker, Masterwork Orchestra timpanist Deane Prouty, and flutist Lisa Hansen.
The evening will conclude with a complimentary reception for audience and performers, complete with birthday cake, to celebrate this iconic American composer ‘s contributions to 20th century American music.
Tickets are $25 for general admission, and $10 for young patrons under 21. Tickets are available at www.masterwork.org and at the door. There is ample free parking behind the church and at the adjacent Chatham Middle School.
