Contra dancing with caller Sunny Lawrence with live music by Strings Attached.

Caller Sunny Lawrence grew up in New York City and began dancing there in 2011. She recently began learning to call contras through Brooklyn Contra’s Caller’s Workshop series. Her goal as a caller is to bring a clear, calm, and joyful presence to the mic, to make contra accessible to new dancers, and to strengthen her beloved dance communities.

String Attached features Christie Riehl on cello. Doug Healy on guitar, and Nathalie Levine on fiddle. As to their name, the band explains “a string vibrates when it is securely attached at both ends to a musical instrument. This prison of attachment paradoxically gives to the musician the opportunity for greatest freedom of movement and thought and creativity. The result: sympathetic vibrations in the muscles and bones of proximal dancers who are suddenly unable to avoid whole body movement. An ideal way to induce dancing among those who love to dance. Our band is committed to playing with all strings attached.”

We once again welcome contributions of home-baked [or not] goodies to share at the break.

Please bring your own water bottle with your name on it. Water bottles may be filled at the kitchen sink.

All dances are now called to the gender-neutral terms Larks & Robins.
