City of Champions: A football history talk with Hank Gola

Join us for a fascinating author talk by Hank Gola who will present the historically significant story of some scrappy kids from Garfield, NJ who famously upset the hands-down favorite Miami team for the US nationwide high school football championship in 1939. Gola’s book “City of Champions: An American story of leather helmets, iron wills & the high school kids from Jersey who won it all” offers new perspectives on the history, sports, culture and politics of Depression-era America. Hank Gola is a multiple award-winning reporter and book author from Parsippany who has written extensively on sports and the history of sports for the NY Daily News, the Morris Daily Record and the NY Post. A native of Garfield, NJ, Gola has a BA in History from Montclair State College and speaks nationwide about the history and business of sports. The author will have books available for purchase and signing.
