Black, White, and Yellow Taxis: Morris County and the Green Book
October 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeJoin local author and historian Janet W. Foster to learn the history behind her new book, “Black, White, and Yellow: Morris County and The Green Book.” The first edition of the “Negro Motorist Green Book” appeared in 1936 and was published annually for 30 years. It listed businesses around the country that welcomed African-American travelers including 581 in New Jersey of which three were in Madison and two in Morristown. Foster, in a two-year project with a team of scholars from around the state, identified local sites listed in the Green Book. Through her research into those businesses, emerges a fascinating view of African-American communities throughout the state in the mid-20th century. Cosponsored by Morris County Historical Society and the Morristown and Morris Township Public Library in conjunction with the New Jersey Historical Commission and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities as part of Morris County’s first county-wide survey of African American history and historic sites. The program will be held at the Morristown and Morris Township Library, 1 Miller Road, Morristown. Free.
