The Morris County Park Commission Seeks Public Input
for New Jersey Green Acres Development Grant

Morris Township, NJ (Feb. 3, 2026) The Morris County Park Commission (MCPC) is pursuing a grant through the New Jersey Green Acres Park Development Grant Program for the Boonton Reservoir Trail Project.

MCPC is seeking funding to support the second phase of a planned 7.7-mile trail on the scenic 1,200+ acre Boonton Reservoir property and associated improvements.

The Reservoir and surrounding property are owned by Jersey City and straddle the Town of Boonton and the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills. The project will provide first time, public access to the Reservoir property, under the terms of a 40-year lease (and a renewal option for an additional 40 years) negotiated between the Park Commission and Jersey City.

A total of $1.75M is to be requested for the project in the grant application. The project will specifically include the installation of Phase 2 of the trail (roughly 1.8 miles), featuring improvements, such as boardwalk sections in wet areas, multiple pedestrian bridges, benches in select locations, and two parking areas that will provide eastern access along Greenbank Road and western access along Parsippany Boulevard.

MCPC is seeking public input on the project, and the proposed Green Acres grant application. A survey designed to collect community feedback has been prepared. The results from the survey will guide future planning efforts and be included in the grant package submittal.

Community input is an important component of the Green Acres application process and area residents are encouraged to participate.

Residents can complete the online survey at Green Acres Program – Park Development Project: Boonton Reservoir Trail Public Engagement Survey.

Paper copies of the survey will be available at the Morris County Park Commission Headquarters located at the Cultural Center, 300 Mendham Road East, Morris Township. Completed paper surveys can be returned at that location or mailed to Morris County Park Commission, PO Box 1295, Morristown, NJ 07962-1295.

A public hearing on the grant application will be held at the Park Commission’s Feb. 23rd meeting at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the auditorium at the Morris County Cultural Center at 300 Mendham Road East in Morris Township.

  1. How about stocking the Reservoir with fish?. Fishing is a great relaxing activity for all ages. Also please don’t put one of those stupid disc golf courses in….damn near got nailed in the head by one at Central Park while the loud obnoxious players were all laughing.
