From St. Peter’s Episcopal Church:

Eco-Feminism for a Suffering World with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn J. Sharp

On March 25, 2023, St. Peter’s Morristown continues the annual Spong lecture series with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Sharp of Yale Divinity School.

Ecofeminism for a Suffering World: A Prophetic Call to Joyous Acts of Restoration, is her topic.

Threats to our global communities are increasing at rapid rates. Extreme weather, rising sea levels, and inland flooding are just the tip of the iceberg. Research shows that the inexorable warming of our planet’s ecosystems contributes to crop failure, food insecurity, and famine. Our living communities are at grave risk, and the implications of these issues affect everyone.

What are some ways we can respond? Eco-feminist interpretation of Scripture can be a powerful catalyst for spiritual reflection and sustained action. While exploring the book of Ruth and Jeremiah 31, we will consider what fidelity and joy can look like when we use our skills, resources, and hearts to cherish and restore the natural world— honoring all living beings!

Prof. Sharp’s research explores the poetics, narrative art, and theology of biblical texts as resources for homiletical theory and practice. She is interested in ways preaching can catalyze the formation of the Christian community via insights from biblical studies, feminist perspectives on power, eco-theology, and emancipatory pedagogy.

Her books include a commentary on Jeremiah 26–52 (2021); a commentary on Joshua (2019); The Prophetic Literature (2019); Wrestling the Word: The Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Believer (2010); and Irony and Meaning in the Hebrew Bible (2009).

Sharp has edited or co-edited six volumes, including The Oxford Handbook of the Prophets (2016) and Feminist Frameworks and the Bible: Power, Ambiguity, and Intersectionality (with Juliana Claassens; 2017). She a member of the Academy of Homiletics, the Societas Homiletica, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Society of Biblical Theologians, and the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality.

An Episcopal priest, she regularly preaches at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Essex and elsewhere.
