Trees, Trails, Flora and Flamingos:
Burnham Park Association kicks off 75th Anniversary Celebration on April 19

Not many all-volunteer, grassroots neighborhood associations can sustain continuous participation for 75 years.

The Burnham Park Association (BPA), active since its founding in 1948, invites the public to join us and our co-sponsor, the Morristown & Morris Township Library, for our 75th Anniversary Celebration kickoff: A free event spotlighting local history and future plans at the Meeting Room of the Library (Miller Road and South Street, Morristown), at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

While enjoying refreshments and socializing, attendees will

– Discover how the Burnham Park area developed, with “then and now” photos dating back to the 1920’s. (You may even spot your own house!)
– Glimpse future plans to revitalize Burnham Park and nearby natural areas.
– Learn about the rich history and achievements of the BPA benefiting our community, including:
-How the “hidden gems” of Jones Woods and the Washington Valley were saved from development
-Who built the 3 ½ miles of hiking trails in Jones Woods and the Green Strip
-How thousands of plantings were installed to make Burnham Park what it is today
-The story behind BPA’s international award
-Find out what all of this has to do with flamingos!

The BPA’s history is Morristown’s and Morris Township’s history. It’s about the local community – the Park, Jones Woods, the Green Strip and the surrounding neighborhoods. Join us for the intriguing stories, photos and accounts and leave with a greater appreciation for the natural beauty of our area.

Comprised of residents from Morristown and Morris Township, the Burnham Park Association is dedicated to preservation of natural and historical resources, environmental stewardship, beautification / restoration of our area, open space advocacy, community education, and public service.

Throughout its years, BPA has collaborated with local municipalities and their agencies/commissions as well as with the Burnham family and many regional organizations such as the Morris County Park Commission, the NJ Highlands Coalition, the Great Swamp Watershed Association, the Washington Valley Association, the Whippany River Watershed Action Committee, the Morris Land Conservancy, Morristown Rotary, American Legion, Friends of Foote’s Pond, Arts by the People, Morris County Art Association, Morris Arts, and Unity Charter School, among others.

Mark your calendars and join us at the library at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, April 19, for BPA’s 75th anniversary kickoff celebration followed by A Day in the Park on Saturday, April 29, in Burnham Park/the Green Strip and Jones Woods — with activities, a scavenger hunt (the flamingos are back!), games, guided walks, and yes, food! Be sure to visit our website, , for regular updates and details on these events and others throughout the year.

The Burnham Park Association gratefully acknowledges support from the library.
