If you like gelato, this Friday the 13th could be your lucky day.

After a ribbon cutting, Guerriero Gelato & Cakes in Morristown will reward its first 100 patrons with gift cards for a free pint of gelato or ice cream, redeemable with a future purchase.

The 64 South St. location–former home of Kilwin’s–is the fifth shop for the husband-and-wife team of Mike and Breanna Guerriero.

“Morristown is the place to be, whether you are a college student looking to bar hop, a married couple looking for a night out, from great restaurants to great shows at the Mayo, there is something for everyone here,” Paterson native Mike Guerriero said in a statement.

The business started in Caldwell in 2013. Montclair, West Orange and Montville followed. But Mike, 31, has been working at gelato shops since he was 14.

As the story goes, he was sentenced to the job by an uncle as punishment for messing up in school.

“My Uncle Phil was a strict disciplinarian. I came home from school and he said ‘Get in the car.’ I thought we were going for ice cream! But instead of the front door, we went in the back. [The manager] looks at me and says ‘You start on Monday,’”  Mike told New Jersey Monthly.

In 2018, his Blueberry Basil won a national gelato competition. His product then was recognized in Italy as North America’s best gelato. Guerriero desserts have appeared on ESPN, the Food Network and Real Housewives, and in the Washington Post, according to the company’s website.

“Our only passion is to make sure our daughter understands how hard we worked to build this brand up. And I want to show her how a kid who grew up dirt-poor in Paterson can work his way up from washing buckets to being a world-famous gelato chef, on the stage with some of the greatest chefs that we admire ad have respect for from all over the world,” Mike says on the site.

In Morristown, the Guerrieros plan to offer more than 60 flavors of hard ice cream, gelato, Italian ice, cakes, mini cones and sandwich packs, and a new Verdi plant-
based gelato. Custom cakes–Breanna’s specialty–will be available, along with counter and delivery service.

They will have plenty of competition. Morristown boasts the South Street Creamery, Taro Frozen Yogurt, Beenie’s Ice Cream and Stack Creamery.

The doors at Guerriero Gelato are scheduled to open on Jan. 13, 2023, at 3 pm, about 45 minutes after the ribbon is cut.
