More than 2,300 customers in Greater Morristown were without power Monday evening, according to Jersey Central Power & Light.

The utility hoped to restore electricity by 11:30 pm or midnight.

With sub-freezing temperatures forecast for the overnight, the Fairchild Firehouse in Morris Township and the Morris Plains Community Center at 51 Jim Fear Drive were opened to the public as warming- and charging centers.

The cause of the outages remains under investigation, JCP&L spokesman Josh Duke told Morristown Green.

Township police reported an outage on Hanover Avenue between Martin Luther King Avenue and Burnham Road at about 5:30 pm. Some 1,571 customers in the Township were affected, according to JCP&L’s website.

Some 642 customers lost power in Morristown, and 217 more were in the dark in Morris Plains.  Borough police said repairs were not scheduled to start until 11 pm.
