The “suspected remains of two individuals” were recovered Saturday afternoon from the ruins of a house fire in Morris Township, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Sunday.

Earlier, the Prosecutor indicated that Robert and Gemma Ricciardi, ages 87 and 85, respectively, residents of the Normandy Heights Road home, were unaccounted for and possibly were victims.

The couple’s godson told Morristown Green on Friday that the Ricciardis perished in the blaze, which was reported by an airplane pilot flying overhead around 3 a.m. on Friday, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. Images from news helicopters showed the slate roof collapsed.

Robert Ricciardi was one half of the Ricciardi Brothers, founders of a paint store chain launched in 1970.

Authorities have not suggested what caused the fire. In a two-sentence statement on Sunday, the Prosecutor’s Office said nothing further would be release until the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office completes an examination of the recovered remains.
