Morristown firemen extinguished a noontime kitchen fire Saturday at the Modera 44 apartment complex.

There were no injuries, but the kitchen of a fourth-floor apartment sustained extensive fire damage, along with smoke, and water damage from sprinklers, to the rest of the unit, said Fire Chief Robert Flanagan.

Water damage reached down to the second floor beneath the apartment, the chief said.

It took about two hours to quell the blaze. Madison, Morris Plains and New Vernon firefighters also responded to the scene, off of Speedwell Avenue.

A town building official condemned the burned unit until it can be rehabbed; electrical issues also must be addressed, Flanagan said.

  1. Good start would be to maintain fire alarm equipment. Always beeping and indicating errors. No surprise nothing is maintained at those buildings.

  2. 2 hours to extinguish the fire? How long before the sprinklers were plugged and drained? Imagine all the water damage that hose streams would’ve done without the fire being controlled by sprinklers.
