Longtime Morristown resident Helen Hall Hoyt has died, at 99

Herbert Hoover was president when Helen Hall Hoyt moved to Morristown from France with her family as a 9-year-old.

She volunteered with many organizations over a seven-decade span in town, where she raised six children with her husband, Harry Hoyt, an attorney and elected town official. He passed in 2012, at age 97.

At 10 am this Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Assumption Church, Morristown will say farewell to Helen. She was 99 when she died earlier this month in Chatham.

Helen Hall Hoyt, 99, died June 3, 2022, at Garden Terrace in Chatham, where she had lived for over three years. Born in Paris, France, to Louis Phillips and Helen Iselin Hall, she moved with her family to Morristown at the age of nine in 1931.

She attended Cours Dupanloup, Paris, France, The Peck School, graduated from Kent Place School in 1941 and in the same year married Henry M. Hoyt.

Mr. & Mrs. Hoyt lived in Morristown for 71 years. She was involved in many community activities and volunteer roles. Mrs. Hoyt served as a docent at the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown, volunteered at the Assumption Church, Morristown Meals on Wheels, the Mount Kemble Home, and United Way.

She was a member of the Garden Club of Morristown, the French Luncheon Club and the Shakespeare Club of Morristown. She was the longest serving member of the Morristown Field Club where she played tennis starting in 1934.

Mrs. Hoyt leaves her six children, Henry M. Hoyt, Jr. (Elizabeth Sklar Hoyt), Elizabeth Bayles (George Cass), Louis P. Hoyt (Ruth Williams, deceased), Frances Iselin Hoyt, Paul Shurtleff Hoyt (Maryann Dunn Hoyt), and Alexander Douglas Hoyt (Anja Nikolic-Hoyt).

She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Henry M. Hoyt; two brothers, Richard Nelville Hall II (Patricia Gerhard) and Henry Iselin Hall (Marcia Moore); son-in-law, John Flagg Bayles; grandson, Samuel Phillips Hoyt and great-grandson, Demetrio Rocha “DJ” Lyrio, Jr.

Mrs. Hoyt also leaves 10 grandchildren, Heidi Bayles Rockwell (James Rockwell); John Flagg Bayles, Jr. (Elaine Dos Santos Bayles), Cynthia Bayles Lyrio (Demetrio Rocha Lyrio), Gregory Bayles (Izthma Marin Bayles), Susan Frances Bayles (Jeffrey Rakitt), Charles Alexander Hoyt, Eric Sklar Hoyt, Palmore McMichael Hoyt, Matej Alexander Hoyt-Nikolic, and Eva Jelena Hoyt-Nikolic.

Great-grandchildren include Stephanie Lyrio Toedt (Dr. Louis Spencer Toedt), Alice Elizabeth Lyrio Cruz (Jose Manuel Cruz), Parker Rockwell, Jordan Rockwell, Hoyt Marin Bayles, Jackson Bayles-Marin, August Wylie Byrne, Jonah Flagg Rakitt, Eliana Beatrice Rakitt, Kaylee Dos Santos Bayles, Casimir Landry, and Mavis Hoyt. The great-great grandchildren are Jose Manuel Cruz, Jr., Ariana Lyrio Cruz and Spencer Lyrio Toedt.

Helen is remembered for her grace and warmth and her kind and playful nature. She and her loving spirit will be missed by many.

A mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 91 Maple Ave., Morristown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to: Alzheimer’s Association of Greater NJ, The Land Conservancy of NJ, and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.
