Summer starts this weekend, unofficially.

We hope you enjoy good company and good times…while taking time to remember the servicemen and women whose sacrifices bought our freedom.

Morris Plains marks Memorial Day with a service and parade on Saturday. Morris Township and Morristown have observances on Monday morning.

THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2022:

The Morristown & Township Library presents yoga on its side lawn at 10 am. Free. Please bring your own yoga mat and equipment. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

Meet Me in Morristown, the summer sidewalk festival, returns for the first of four monthly Thursdays. Downtown businesses may have outdoor displays during the day, followed by arts and entertainment from 5 pm to 9 pm. Fish Eyed Blues will perform on the Green, with openers The FlipCharts. Presented by Morris Arts and the Morristown Partnership. Rain date: Friday.

The library also presents Attentive Walking: Outdoors, at 6 pm at the James Street entrance to Foote’s Pond Wood. Free, for adults. Led by Anita, who has led the library’s Mindful Meditation and Mindful Movement classes.


FRIDAY, MAY 27:

The Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham presents Family Fireside Fun, from 5:30 to 7 pm. Fee: $10-$15. Take your kids (ages 4 and up) on a short trail walk to a firepit for stories, animal trivia and marshmallow roasting. Advance registration required; please bring face masks.

At 7:30 pm, the Folk Project’s Troubadour series presents Magpie, with Spook Handy, at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship. Admission: $10; children 12 and under, free. Livestream: $4.99. Proof of vaccination for ages 12 and up, and masks required; limited capacity. At 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township.

SATURDAY, MAY 28:

The 36th Annual Morris Plains Memorial Day Service and Parade starts with a 9 am service in Roberts Garden, followed at 9:30 pm by Morris County’s largest Memorial parade, featuring 100 units. Afterwards, the VFW on Route 53 will host a gathering with free hot dogs and beverages, and pony rides and other kid-friendly activities. They say “It Never Rains in Morris Plains” (except for last year!); call 973-538-0325 after 6:30 am for parade status if the forecast is egregious.

SUNDAY, MAY 29:

The Morris Museum’s Bickford Theatre in Morris Township presents The Rhythm Method: On Time, at 2 pm. Tickets: $35-$40; under age 18, free. The concert augments the museum exhibition A Cache of Kinetic Art: Timeless Movementsand includes the premiere of a commissioned piece by Parsippany composer Kailyn Williams. Patrons 12 and over must produce proof of full COVID vaccination; masks required. At 6 Normandy Heights Road, 973-971-3706.

MONDAY, MAY 30, MEMORIAL DAY:

A Memorial Day service is scheduled for 10 am outside the Morris Township municipal building on Woodland Avenue.

The ceremony is followed by an 11 am service on the Morristown Green.

If the weather is bad, both services will be consolidated inside the Morris Township municipal building at 11 am.
