From the Morristown Shade Tree Commission:

The Morristown Shade Tree Commission is excited to announce its ninth annual Arbor Day happening this Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Speedwell Lake Park.

This year’s Arbor Day event will be held at 10:30AM at Speedwell Park wherein the Commission will celebrate with a Mayoral planting of three trees.

The first trees are a pair white pines which will be accompanied by a new sugar maple tree. White pines have tremendous benefits to the wildlife, bird, and insect population. Wildlife & birds feed on the seeds of the pine cones and caterpillars thrive on Pine trees which then feed our baby bird population.

Native Maple trees are the first to bloom and when the bees wake up from their winter slumber the Maple tree is its first stop for food.

The Morristown Shade Tree Commission, created in 2013, is responsible for the town’s public trees and shrubs. The commission is currently working in the forested areas of Morristown’s local parks to de-vine and save trees, remove and replace invasive shrubs and begin the eradication of the invasive Ailanthus tree aka “Tree of Heaven”, host to the invasive Spotted Lantern Fly.

The commission meets the third Tuesday of the month in Room 201 in Town Hall at 7 p.m. The public is welcome. Due to COVID 19, meetings are via zoom and the link to those meetings are on the Town of Morristown website.
