Greater Morristown Weekend Preview: Hanukkah, Harvey, and Halls be-decked

There are not enough hours in a weekend to enjoy all that Greater Morristown offers on this weekend.

Gift markets, school plays, dance extravaganzas, comedy, 3D dreidel specs, Santa… you’ll need a scorecard to plot your entertainment options. And here it is!

THURSDAY, DEC. 2, 2021:

Chabad of Morristown and the Rabbincal College of America will present music, donuts, “3D dreidel glasses,” and entertainment by the Hoopwizard after lighting the giant menorah on the Morristown Green. It all starts at 5:30 pm. For more, call 973-307-0195 or email here.

The Morristown United Methodist Church will hold a “Blue Christmas Service” at 6 pm, “to mourn the losses and griefs of the year.”  All are welcome. At 50 South Park Place.  A recording of the service will be posted Friday on the church website.


FRIDAY, DEC. 3:

Santa will be taking requests from 3 pm to 8 pm, at The Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green. Photos with Santa are $10.  In the activity tent, Preschool Advantage will host Snowflake and Sock Snowman Crafts.  Presented by the Morristown Partnership, the festival runs through Dec. 19.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey presents its first Holiday Bazaar, from 2 pm to 8 pm, and again on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, at its Thomas Kean Theatre Factory, 3 Vreeland Road, Florham Park, 973-845-6789.

The Macculloch Hall Historical Museum and Acorn Hall in Morristown are joining forces today (candlelight tours, 4 pm to 8 pm) and Saturday (10 am to 4 pm) for Deck the Halls. One $25 ticket buys admission to both museums, which are decked out in Victorian holiday splendor. Thomas Nast’s most famous Christmas scenes will be displayed at Macculloch Hall; hear carols on Acorn Hall’s 1872 Chickering grand piano. Pre-registration, masks required. Four Morristown restaurants are offering discounts to Deck the Halls patrons. Macculloch Hall is at 45 Macculloch Ave. Acorn Hall is at 68 Lafayette Ave.

A Community Creche Exhibit runs from 5 pm to 9 pm, and continues from 1 pm to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 283 James St., Morris Township,  (973) 539-4030.

Morristown High School Theatre presents Harvey at 7 pm.  Tickets: $8-$15. At the MHS Auditorium, 50 Early St.  Masks required. Rescheduled from November, due to pandemic closure. Encore performances on Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.

The Folk Project’s weekly Troubadour series presents Chorus Song Night at 7:30 pm in the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship in Morris Township. Admission: $10 at the door, $10.50 online; livestream, $2.99. Proof of vaccination required for live show; no children under 12 (until they are eligible for vaccination). SATURDAY, DEC. 4:

The New Jersey Youth Symphony presents classical concerts at 1 pm and 5 pm at the Dolan Performance Hall at Saint Elizabeth University in Morris Township. Tickets: $15-$20. At 2 Convent Road.

The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms in Morris Plains presents a free Crafts-Mas Open House in the Log House and a Crafts-Mas Pop-Up Shop in the Education Center, from 1 pm to 6 pm. At 2352 State Route 10, 973-540-0311.

The 11th annual Assumption Parish Christmas Market runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Morristown. Fifteen vendors will offer African crafts, photographer-produced note cards and prints, watercolor artworks, wood crafts, hand-painted silk scarves, knitted and crocheted outerwear and baby items, new/nearly new household and gift items; plus a 50/50 raffle and lots of home-baked Christmas goodies. Proceeds benefit two Assumption-based African charities: The Village Angels of Tanzania, which employs local, at-risk youths to make weekly food deliveries to abandoned, isolated elderly poor; and Africa Surgery Inc., which brings doctors and patients together in Sierra Leone for life-saving therapies.  At Rauscher Hall, 91 Maple Ave. Free parking behind the church. Also on Sunday from 7 am to 2 pm.

Carolyn Dorfman Dance presents Backstage Pass – A Joyous Return to Live Dance, at 7:30 pm at the Madison Community Arts Center. Tickets for the limited space venue are $20 for adults and $10 for students. The interactive, narrated program includes excerpts of PRIMA!, exploring the music of Louis Prima. SUNDAY, DEC. 5

The Morris Winter Farmers Market is back for a ninth season, at a new venue: Convent Station in Morris Township.  It’s open from 9:30 am to 1 pm each Sunday through March 27, 2022 (except for Dec. 26). More vendors, more space, and more free parking, promises sponsor Grow It Green Morristown.

New Jersey Branch 75 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America presents a 2 pm talk in Whippany by Canadian Prof. Lubomyr Luciuk, who will discuss two books: How People Live in Soviet Russia, Impressions from a Journey  (reserve a copy) and Operation Payback, about Soviet disinformation regarding Jewish/Ukrainian relations in the post-World War era. Pastor Sidney and Teresa Williams of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Morristown will be honored at 4 pm for their Table of Hope soup kitchen.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will present the couple with its Light the World award, at 283 James St. in Morris Township.

At 7:30 pm the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey presents an online replay of its Nov. 14 concert, featuring music of Franco Moro, Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann and a staged performance of Bach’s Coffee Cantata
