From the Morristown High School Theatre program:

The award-winning Morristown High School Theatre program is excited and proud to announce the return to an in-person Fall Drama production of Harvey, a Pulitzer Prize winning three-act comedy by American Playwright Mary Chase.

“The world needs a good laugh… and we hope to give it to them,“ says Director George LaVigne. Performances will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2021.

The MHS Theatre Fall Drama program thrives under the leadership of LaVigne, Backstage Manager/Costume Head Stephanie Rubin, and Technical Director Kevern “K.C.” Cameron, and through the hard work and dedication of the student cast, crew, costume, hair and makeup teams.

The lead character, Elwood P. Dowd is kind and friendly to everyone he meets. He befriends a Pooka, a six-foot-tall invisible rabbit named Harvey, and their friendship causes quite a stir among his family and friends!

His embarrassed sister and niece fear Elwood’s behavior will cause them to lose their social status. When his sister attempts to commit him to a facility, the antics abound when nothing turns out as planned.

The story underpins the idea of being open and kind to others, accepting people for who they are, and understanding that it’s okay to be different.

“Well, I’ve wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I finally won out over it.” – Elwood P. Dowd.

In coordination with the production, MHS Theater is providing outreach on the topic of mental well being in a variety of ways, including a “week of happiness” for the elementary schools, focusing on mental health through positive psychology, with recorded videos of the cast and follow up activities for the teachers.

Information also will be available on display at each performance about the Morris County Stigma Free Initiative to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and to show respect.
