Morristown High School is set to return to in-person classes on Monday, after being in a COVID-19 shutdown since Nov. 12, 2021.

“The local health department has determined that it is safe for Morristown High School to
resume in-person instruction on Monday, Nov. 22. We look forward to seeing our
students back in the building,” Principal Mark Manning said in a message to parents and students on Friday.

Another six individuals from the high school tested positive for the novel coronavirus last week, for a total of 26 confirmed infections this month, Manning said.

“We are coordinating closely with the local health department for guidance and contact
tracing. If anyone has been identified as a close contact, we have communicated with them
directly. Those individuals who have tested positive are completing the required quarantine at home,” the principal said.

Health confidentiality laws prevented the release of further information, he said.

It was the Morris School District’s first switch to all-virtual instruction of this semester.

Manning reiterated a request to all families and students to follow COVID safety protocols promoted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That includes vaccinations for eligible persons, along with mask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing.

As of Sunday, New Jersey’s transmission rate was 1.21.  Anything above 1.0 indicates the disease is spreading.

Morris County reported 72 new cases, and another 19 probable cases.  The county has had nearly 50,000 confirmed cases, with 10,000 more considered probable, and 1,047 COVID deaths, since the pandemic started in March of 2020.

More than 1 million cases have been confirmed in New Jersey, with 25,358 confirmed deaths and more than 2,800 probable fatalities.

The virus has killed more than 771,000 people nationwide, and has claimed nearly 7.4 million lives worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Morristown High’s closure pushed back the school theatrical production of Harvey from this weekend to Dec. 3-5.
