From Morristown Medical Center:

Atlantic Health System, a leading provider of health care in New Jersey, today announced that Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center and Chilton Medical Center all earned the highest possible safety rating of ‘A’ by The Leapfrog Group in its Fall 2021 Hospital Safety Grades.

“Our commitment to the safety of our patients and team members has never wavered throughout the pandemic and remains at the heart of the extraordinary care our doctors, nurses and other caregivers provide,” said Brian Gragnolati, president and CEO, Atlantic Health System.

“I am grateful for each of our 18,000 talented health care heroes, who are dedicated to helping us build healthier communities.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns common letter grades – ‘A’ being the highest – to general hospitals across the country and is updated every spring and fall.

Leapfrog uses up to 22 evidence-based measures of patient safety, including CMS Medicare PSI 90 Patient Safety and Adverse Events composite which includes 10 component measures.

“An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a tremendous achievement, of which this community should be extremely proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I thank the leadership and workforce of Atlantic Health System for its commitment to prioritizing patients and their safety, especially during these trying times.”

All of Atlantic Health’s ‘A’ graded facilities have earned top marks for consecutive scoring periods including Morristown Medical Center’s maintained ‘A’ Grade since Fall 2015, Chilton Medical Center’s consecutive ‘A’ since Fall 2018, Newton Medical Center’s ‘A’ since Spring 2019, and Overlook Medical Center’s ‘A’ since Spring 2021.

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. * Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2018 through 2020 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only. For appendectomy and bariatric surgery, Healthgrades used inpatient data from 16 states that provide all-payer data for years 2017 through 2019. Due to the highly variable impact of the pandemic on hospital outcomes, Healthgrades made the decision to exclude cases with a COVID-19 diagnosis from the 2020 data in order to preserve the statistical integrity of our models and fairly evaluate clinical outcomes at all hospitals.
