Greater Morristown weekend preview: Steely Dan, Josie & Grace, and folk, opera and classical, too

If you love music and theater, Greater Morristown is the place to be this weekend.

Steely Dan performs favorites from four classic albums at MPAC. At the Bickford, a play explores the friendship of Josephine Baker and Grace Kelly. Folk fave Pat Wictor visits the Troubadour, a Simon & Garfunkel tribute comes to Madison, chamber music fills the First Baptist Church, and opera returns to St. Margaret’s.

THURSDAY, NOV. 4, 2021:

Relax and decompress at 10 am, with yoga on the side lawn of the Morristown & Township Library. Please wear a mask to enter and exit the session, and bring your own yoga mat and desired equipment. The event is open to all ability levels and no sign-up is required.

Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center presents Steely Dan’s Absolutely Normal Tour, with shows tonight, Saturday and Sunday. Tonight’s 8 pm show features hits from the album Gaucho. Tickets: $106.50-$206.50. Masks, proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test required for ages 12 and up. At 100 South St., call 973-539-8008.

 


FRIDAY, NOV. 5:

The Folk Project’s weekly Troubadour series presents Pat Wictor, with openers The Greystone Singers, at 7:30 pm in the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship in Morris Township. Admission: $10 at the door, $10.50 online; livestream, $2.99. Proof of vaccination required for live show; no children under 12 (until they are eligible for vaccination). At 21 Normandy Heights Road.

The Morris Museum’s Bickford Theatre presents Josie & Grace, a play exploring the friendship of singer Josephine Baker and Grace Kelly, actress and Princess of Monaco. The 8 pm show stars Tymisha Harris, whose one-woman portrayal of Baker wowed audiences last year on the Museum’s back deck, and Rachel Comeau. Tickets: $40, Museum Members, $35. Encore performances on Saturday and Sunday. This is the Bickford’s first indoor theatrical production since the pandemic hit in March 2020; social distancing protocols will be observed and guests over 12 years old must provide proof of vaccination.  At 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township, (973) 971-3700.


SATURDAY, NOV. 6:

 

The Market Street Mission hosts its 31st annual winter coat giveaway, from 10 am to 1 pm on the Morristown Green. (Rain location: 9 Market St.)

Daniel Colalillo’s Classical Keys series continues with a 7 pm chamber music concert at Morristown’s First Baptist Church, featuring Colalillo on piano, Christopher Bush on clarinet and Molly Aronson on cello, for a program of Schubert, Rota and Brahms. Tickets: $25, online or at the door. At 51 Washington St.

The Madison Arts and Culture Alliance presents Scarborough Fair, a Simon & Garfunkel Experience, at 7:30 pm at the cultural center at 10 Kings Road, Madison. Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door.

SUNDAY, NOV. 7:

The Morristown Farmers Market is open every Sunday through Nov. 21, 2021, from 8:30 am to 1 pm, in parking lot 10J, behind the Morristown Post Office at Spring and Morris Streets. The Morristown Partnership welcomes 17 new vendors this year. Persons at high risk for COVID-19, as defined by the CDC, may be admitted early, at 8 am.

Opera at Florham brings five gifted singers to Morristown for La Vie de Bohème  at 3 pm, at St. Margaret’s Church. Admission: $25 for adults, $10 for students.Read our preview. At 6 Sussex Ave.

For original music, join The Folk Project for Joe Guzzo’s Stayaway Sundays Show at 3 pm. Each week, Guzzo presents fans with video performances from events past, interviews with performers, and his own take on the world of music.

MONDAY, NOV. 8:

The Madison Arts and Culture Alliance presents My Bill Evans with the Joel Zelnik Trio at 7:30 pm,  at the cultural center at 10 Kings Road, Madison. Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door. For this show, everyone is encouraged to be vaccinated and unvaccinated patrons need to show proof of a negative Covid test within 72 hours of showtime.
