A memorial service for the Rt. Rev. John Shelby Spong, author, theologian and former Episcopal Bishop of Newark, will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown on Friday, Oct. 15, 2021, at 11 am.
Bishop Spong passed away earlier this month in Virginia. He was 90.
He authored 26 books, lectured around the world, and appeared on Sixty Minutes and numerous other TV programs.
An advocate for inclusion, Spong ordained the first English woman, and the first openly gay man, in the Episcopal church. His views on Christian doctrines were provocative and controversial.
