Greater Morristown (hardly virtual) Weekend Preview: Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the new McNally Field

There is no shortage of things to do this Father’s Day weekend in Greater Morristown.

Juneteenth events. The dedication of a memorial athletic field honoring honoring a late State Trooper. Drive-in concerts.  And lots more.

THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 2021:

Relax and decompress at 10 am, with yoga on the side lawn of The Morristown &  Township Library. Please wear a mask to enter and exit the session, and bring your own yoga mat and desired equipment. The event is open to all ability levels and no sign-up is required.

Calling all ukulele players:  A limited number of passes are on sale for the Folk Project’s 2021 Uke Fest, scheduled for Aug. 20-21 at a Rockaway Township home. Concerts, workshops and jam sessions. Reservations limited to first 50 vaccinated people. Weekend passes: $85.

Jazz favorite Grover Kemble performs at Rockaway’s Caffe Navona, 147 Route 46, from 6 – 9 pm.

The MPAC Trend Motors Drive-In Concert Series roars into gear with at 6:30 pm with The Nerds – dubbed “America’s Party Band” – for an evening of music and fun. At the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. Passes are $100 per carload for general parking and $125 for preferred parking; passes also are available for the entire summer series.

The Morristown & Township Library hosts a 7 pm virtual book club discussion, featuring Amy Bloom’s White Houses, a special Pride Month selection.  Email here for the Zoom link. Please include your full name and town of residence.

The Morris Museum’s Jazz on the Back Deck series presents Evan Arntzen and Jon-Erik Kellso, at 8 pm. Admission: $50 for an 8 by 8 foot block, which accommodates up to two patrons. At 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township, 973-971-3706.

The North Jersey Civil War Round Table presents a 7 pm virtual talk, Medicinal Plants of the Civil War, by Dr. Lesley Parness.  Request email link here.


FRIDAY, JUNE 18:

At 6:30 pm, MPAC presents The Sensational Soul Cruisers for an intimate tour of the soul genre. At the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. Passes are $100 per carload for general parking and $125 for preferred parking; passes also are available for the entire summer series.

At 7:30 pm,  The Folk Project presents a Troubadour At Home Live Concert, featuring home-grown favorites Frank & Hank. In-person tickets to this home concert in Rockaway Township are $10.50, with required proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Location and details will be sent with purchase confirmation. Livestream access is free.

Frank Sole and Henry Nerenberg

Madcap performer Carla Ulbrich brings her zany songs to your living room (virtually, of course) at 7:30 pm. Free; tips welcome.


SATURDAY, JUNE 19, JUNETEENTH:

The Morris Plains Farmers Market is back, every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm until Oct. 9, 2021. Hosting eight vendors, and special guests. At 771 Speedwell Ave.

Grow It Green Morristown’s Yoga on the Urban Farm starts at 9 am; third Saturday of each month through October. Led by BeWell Integrative Health Services. Donation: $10. Bring a mat and water bottle and reusable tote for shopping afterward at the Farm Stand. At the Urban Farm, 31 Hazel St., Morristown.

Morris Township will dedicate Capt. Brian McNally Field at 10 am, at Freelan Green Park, on Weathervane Drive. New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy and State Police Supt. Col. Patrick Callahan are among scheduled speakers who will remember the late Marine and State Trooper.

Grow It Green Morristown’s Saturday Farm Stand is back, each week through Oct. 30, 2021 from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Urban Farm, 31 Hazel St.  Locally grown, pesticide-free produce.

The Sankofa Heritage Collective of Morris County presents Morris County’s 8th Annual Juneteenth celebration, from 11 am to 2 pm at the County College of Morris in Randolph. Dover Mayor Carolyn Blackman will be honored.

Morristown-based nonprofit Empower the Village hosts a Juneteenth weekend outdoor exhibition from noon to 6 pm at the Montclair, 3 South Mountain Way. One day pass: $100; two days, $150.  Email here for more info. Rain dates: Next weekend.


SUNDAY, JUNE 20, FATHER’S DAY:

Happy Father’s Day!

Empower the Village concludes its weekend Juneteenth art show at the Montclair Museum from 1 pm to 5 pm. See Saturday entry for details.

Grover Kemble performs outdoors with the Noble Brothers Band at 3 pm in the beer garden of the Stanhope House. Tickets: $12. At 45 Main St., Stanhope, 973-347-7777.

For more original music, join The Folk Project for Joe Guzzo’s Stayaway Sundays Show at 3 pm. Each week, Guzzo presents fans with video performances from events past, interviews with performers, and his own take on the world of music.

The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey concludes its virtual Spring Festival at 7:30 pm with online performances by classical guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz and the Evergreen Violin Trio (Emily James, Sara d’Sa, and Amelia Murccia), of music by Witold Lutoslawski, Manuel Ponce, Henry Purcell, Peter Warlock, and others. Also, World Premieres of My Blue Garden by Massimo Malavasi and Violin Trio by Maestro Robert W. Butts.  Watch here.

Morris Township kicks off its 12th season of Summer Concerts at the Ginty Gazebo, with Jake Thistle, at 7 pm. Bring a lawn chair or beach blanket!

Join The Folk Project at 7 pm for the latest edition of its Virtual Stayaway series, this week featuring singer-songwriter Tom Chapin. Free, with all donations going directly to the artists.
