Greater Morristown (sometimes virtual) Weekend Preview: Funnybone of Steel, Farmers Market and a Bioblitz, too

It’s starting to feel like summer again.  Lawn yoga, hikes, deck jazz, Bioblitzes…let the games begin!

THURSDAY,  JUNE 10, 2021:

Relax and decompress at 10 am, with yoga on the side lawn of The Morristown &  Township Library. Please wear a mask to enter and exit the session, and bring your own yoga mat and desired equipment. The event is open to all ability levels and no sign-up is required.

The Library hosts two virtual book clubs, starting at 10 am. Join a discussion of Amy Bloom’s White Houses, a special Pride Month selection. And break out an old classic at 7 pm, for a conversation centered on D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover.  Email here for the morning Zoom link, and here for the evening link.  Please include your full name and town of residence.

Jazz favorite Grover Kemble performs at Rockaway’s Caffe Navona, 147 Route 46, from 6 – 9 pm.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority presents an online forum, Local Elections Matter, Understanding the Process, at 7 pm.  Speakers include Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi, state Sen. Vin Gopal and Union Township Mayor Michéle Delisfort.

Are you and your friends the smartest around? Prove it, at Trivia Night at MPAC,  in the Mayo Center’s Main Lobby at 7 pm. It’s $40 for a team of four. A cash bar is on site. Space is limited, register here. At 100 South St., Morristown, 973-539-8008.

The Morris Museum’s Jazz on the Back Deck series presents Sounds of the Jazz Age, with Colin Hancock’s Red Hot Eight, at 8 pm. Admission: $50 for an 8 by 8 foot block, which accommodates up to two patrons. At 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township, 973-971-3706. (Rain date: Friday, June 13.)

 

 


FRIDAY, JUNE 11:

Eric D’Alessandro promises big laughs at the Mayo Performing Arts Center’s Main Stage. In a bid to be crowned comedy’s Iron Man, D’Alessandro will perform five sets: At 7 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, and at 7 pm on Sunday. Adults only. In-person tickets: $35 – $45. Madcap performer Carla Ulbrich brings her zany songs to your living room (virtually, of course) at 7:30 pm. Free; tips welcome.


SATURDAY, JUNE 12:

The Morris Plains Farmers Market is back, every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm until Oct. 9, 2021. Hosting eight vendors, and special guests. At 771 Speedwell Ave.

 

A few slots still may be available for the Morristown Board of Adjustment’s 9 am Turtle Road Tour.  Don’t wait too long — these mystical adventures only happen about once every six years.

The first annual BioBlitz Morris Nature Festival runs from 10 am to 4 pm at Lewis Morris Park in Morris Township. A bioblitz is like a giant scavenger hunt, where participants find and identify as many species as possible. The free festivities include live music, environmental exhibits, and more. Presented by the Whippany River Watershed Action Committee and the Morris County Parks Commission.

The Morristown & Township Library offers a workshop on Google Sheets from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. This spreadsheet tool is an easy, versatile way to organize information and analyze data, and this workshop will cover some must-know applications of the program. Register here.

SUNDAY, JUNE 13:

Find some comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes, and take a brisk five-mile Fitness Walk at the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham, from 8 am to 10 am. Varied terrain. Meet at McVickers Brook parking lot at 239 Pleasant Valley Road. Vaccinated dogs on leash are welcome. Free to members. Non-member fee: $10. Pre-registration required 24 hours in advance. Face coverings required for non-vaccinated visitors.

If you just can’t get enough original music, join The Folk Project for Joe Guzzo’s Stayaway Sundays Show at 3 pm. Each week, Guzzo presents fans with video performances from events past, interviews with performers, and his own take on the world of music.

The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey continues its Spring Festival at 7:30 pm with online performances by violinist Hui Wang — playing nocturnes and waltzes by Frédéric Chopin–and percussionist Jesse Gerbasi and pianist Sohyun Ahn. The program also includes music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Peter Jarvis,

TUESDAY, JUNE 15:

The Folk Project continues its Virtual Stayaway series at 7 pm with Buddy Mondlock, an internationally recognized singer-songwriter whose works have been recorded by Garth Brooks and Peter, Paul, and Mary. Free to watch, with all donations going directly to the artist.


THURSDAY, JUNE 17, AND FRIDAY, JUNE 18:

The MPAC Trend Motors Drive-In Concert Series roars into gear with a pair of live shows. On Thursday at 6:30 pm, join The Nerds – dubbed “America’s Party Band” – for an evening of music and fun.

On Friday at 6:30 pm, The Sensational Soul Cruisers present an intimate tour of the soul genre. At the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. Passes are $100 per carload for general parking and $125 for preferred parking; passes also are available for the entire summer series.
