Flanked by the acting police chief and town public safety director on the steps of town hall, Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty on Tuesday issued a video statement deploring the recent mass shootings in Boulder, Colo., and Atlanta.

“These acts of terror are not who we are as a people. Our strength as a nation lies in our diversity,” said Dougherty, on the same day he announced he will seek a fourth term.

Expressing condolences to families of the shooting victims, the mayor added there is “no place for hatred or violence in Morristown” and pledged to preserve the “freedom and safety” of every resident in town.

  1. So you are saying that the Boulder killer bought guns from a gun store that is not allowed to sell guns??? Huh?
Source? Your last sentence makes no sense.
    Asking for a friend…

  2. Read the article and noticed that the men in the bar were not carrying loaded guns in the bar but had left the bar to retrieve them from the locked trunks of their cars.
This shooter also had mental problems, another reason for background checks.
The Boulder killer also purchased his guns at a store not legally permitted to sell guns. Why was that permitted?

  3. The only way to stop these mass shootings is by shooting the shooter. Well, unless you want to have airport-like security at every large store or office building. What a lot of people don’t realize is that gun laws only affect law-abiding citizens. Criminals, by definition, don’t follow the law. Hundreds of millions of guns are already out there. There is no way to get them back. You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. Does anyone think that thugs will turn in their guns? More sober, moral, good citizens need to be armed and trained in marksmanship. We live in a world in which this kind of thing can happen anywhere and at any time.

A few years ago King Soopers directed customers to not bring guns into their stores. Of course the loser involved in yesterday’s tragedy didn’t listen. Many of the other customers probably did, and were soft targets.

There need to be more stories about law-abiding citizens bringing down would-be mass shooters. We need fewer stories like the one out of Boulder and more stories like this: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/05/25/armed-citizen-kills-shooter-who-shot-oklahoma-restaurant-diners/643726002/
