Because of a COVID outbreak affecting at least 12 people–most of them related–Morristown High School will remain all-virtual through Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, the Morris School District announced over the weekend.

Other schools in the district will reopen for in-person instruction on Tuesday, Jan. 5.  Last month, the district had announced plans to reopen on Monday.

All in-person extracurricular activities and sports are cancelled until further notice at the high school.

Students who traveled beyond New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania or Delaware should contact the school nurse and quarantine for 14 days.

Faculty and staff who have traveled beyond that region should get tested for the coronavirus within three to five days upon their return, and follow the instructions below.

The full statement follows.

From the Morris School District:

JAN. 2, 2021
  • ALL MSD SCHOOLS WILL BE VIRTUAL ON MONDAY, JAN. 4, so that we can finalize staffing needs and rearrangements as a result of an increase in travel-related quarantines following the State’s new guidelines.
  • Lafayette Learning Center, all K-5 schools, and FMS will reopen for in-person instruction on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
  • Morristown High School will continue all-virtual instruction through Friday, Jan. 8, due to an outbreak of coronavirus (at least 12 current active positives, most of which are related). In partnership with the local health department, we will determine next weekend whether MHS can resume in-person learning the following week. There will be no in-person extracurricular activities, co-curricular activities, or sports at MHS until further notice.
  • Correction to the Dec. 31 Update: Please note revised requirements following travel outside our immediate region (that is, to anywhere other than NY, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, or Delaware):
    • For students: Contact the school nurse and quarantine for 14 days; no test is required.
    • For faculty and staff: Anyone who has traveled outside our immediate region should get a PCR COVID-19 test (a viral test, not an antibody test) 3-5 days after their return from travel.
      • If the test is positive:
        a) Contact Paula Mendez and your principal
        b) Quarantine for 14 days
      • If the test is negative:
        a) Contact Paula Mendez and your principal
        b) Quarantine for 7 days
  • Breakfast and lunch distribution will continue according to our current schedule. If you need assistance with meals but are unable to pick them up at the designated times, please contact Linda Ladolcetta at 973-292-2000, Ext. 2111, or email here.
  • Thank you for your cooperation and diligence in reporting symptoms, exposure, and travel to our school nurses. Your transparency and honesty help our entire community stay safe. If you are contacted by local health department officials, please respond to their inquiry so that they can properly conduct contact tracing.
