‘There’s no sleeping tonight’: Close races in Greater Morristown as vote counts continue

As mail-in votes remain to be counted in this pandemic election, here’s where key Greater Morristown races stand very early on Wednesday:

Vice President Joe Biden has won New Jersey, with 61 percent to President Donald Trump’s 38 percent.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) has won a second term in a landslide over GOP contender Rik Mehta.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th District) has scored a decisive victory over GOP challenger Rosemary Becchi to win a second term in Congress.

The margin of victory in each of those races appears sufficient to rule out any reversal by subsequent mail-in tallies.

But outcomes of the following contests could change. Ballots postmarked on Election Day will be counted if received by Nov. 10, 2020. At that point, counting commences for “provisional” ballots — special ballots filled out because of discrepancies.

Meanwhile, ballots deposited in drop boxes across the county still may need counting in this all-paper election. Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi has until Nov. 23 to certify the results.

So… here we go:

Democratic challenger Rupande Mehta holds a 51-49 percent lead over state Sen. Anthony M. Bucco in a special election for the 25th District.

In the 25th District special Assembly race, Democratic challenger Darcy Draeger leads state Assemblywoman Aura Dunn by 53-47 percent.

Those state legislative numbers were posted by NJ Spotlight.

Democratic challenger Cary Amaro holds a significant lead over Republican Freeholder Tayfun Selen.

In the race for Morris Township committee, the Morris County Clerk’s Office shows the Democratic ticket of Mayor Cathy Wilson (3,378 votes) and Bud Ravitz (3,271) with a sizable early lead over Republicans Sandi Garcia (1999) and Joe Calvanelli Jr. (1,976).

“Mayor Wilson and I are pretty pleased with the start we have,” Ravitz said late on Election Night. “We have to let the process play out. We think there’s a lot more votes out there.”

In Morristown’s four-way race for two seats on the Morris School District board, incumbent Meredith Davidson (1,071) and Elisabeth Wall (900) lead Oliver Starnes (681) and Vivian Rodriguez (622).

In the three-way race for two Morris Plains council seats, Democratic challenger Cara Parmigiani leads with 549 votes. Republican incumbent Sal Cortese is next with 490 votes, and his fellow GOP Councilman Art Bruhn, at 488, is two votes shy of hanging onto his seat.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Parmigiani. “I wish everyone the best. We are here to put Morris Plains first. There’s no sleeping tonight.”
