The pandemic ruled out fundraising and bonding events for the Morristown High School Girls Tennis Team. But it was no match for their community spirit.
Led by captains Alex Fisher, Maddy Beavis and Madison Silver, the athletes replaced fundraising for themselves with a collection for the Interfaith Food Pantry.
On Tuesday, the young women delivered 15 overflowing bags of food and household staples to the nonprofit in Morris Plains, filling its donation bin.
“We all felt so fortunate to even be able to play tennis when so many people are struggling to work and feed their families because of the COVID restrictions. It seemed so tone deaf to try to raise funds for ourselves when we already have so much. It was only right to give something back,” said Fisher, returning as captain from last season.
Thanking her teammates and parents for their donations, Beavis said the team felt lucky to be playing this fall. She added “we felt it was important to also stay aware of the fact that there are families in our community who are struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic and need support. ”
Silver echoed those sentiments. Coach Jeff Tukel was impressed.
