MORRIS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR THE MYLES SMILED ON YOU AWARD IN HONOR OF MYLES MISLAVSKY

Secondary Education Loan Reduction Award Applications Open for Morristown High School Alumni Through Saturday, Oct. 31

Student loans continue to be an ongoing concern for many college and trade school graduates. To help ease this burden, the Morris Educational Foundation (MEF), is proud to continue the Myles Smiled on You Award, a secondary education loan reduction fund in memory of 2013 Morristown High School graduate Myles Mislavsky.

The MEF, a non-profit organization enhancing excellence in education in the Morris School District, will administer the award, which is now open for MHS alumni – Class of 2009 and after – to apply from now through Oct. 31, 2020.

Myles Mislavsky
Myles Mislavsky passed away in 2018.

Myles Mislavsky was not only a Morristown High School graduate; he was a well-known and well-loved member of the community with a contagious smile that could light up a room.

Myles’ family – Hector Mislavsky, Judy Martinez and Jessie Mislavsky – continue to share his famous smile and honor his memory through this award for secondary education loan reduction.

The Myles Smiled on You award is for deserving MHS alumni who exemplify Myles’ many positive characteristics and have outstanding college or trade school debt. The award is funded by Myles’ family, friends and the Golden Bagel Runners.

“We are honored to administer the Myles Smiled on You Award on behalf of the Mislavsky/Martinez family for the second year. Myles was an amazing human being. He made a lasting impact on the lives of those around him and was committed to helping others. This award continues his legacy of generosity and kindness,” said Molly Servais, Morris Educational Foundation Scholarship chair and member of the Morris Educational Foundation Board of Trustees.

Morris Educational Foundation logoTo be considered for this award, the Morristown High School alumni must have graduated from a two- or four-year college, university or trade school and must meet the application requirements. In 2020, multiple awards of up to $5,000 will be awarded to alumni who graduated after 2009, at least one of whom graduated with Myles in 2013.

In addition to demonstrating secondary education debt burden, the award application requires three essays of 250 word or less detailing the following topics:  How did you or are you dealing with challenging mental, physical health or other situations; Describe how you have demonstrated empathy toward others; and What do you do to help your family/community, accompanied by a letter of recommendation.

It is the hope of the Mislavsky/Martinez Family that with this financial award, Myles will “smile on” Morristown High School alumni just as he did during his amazing life. In its inaugural year, the Morris Educational Foundation awarded the following recipients with the 2019 Myles Smiled on You Award, each of whom were awarded a $5,000 debt reduction:

  • Katrina Colquhoun – Class of 2013
  • Sophie Connolly – Class of 2013
  • Kelly Hall – Class of 2010
  • Stacey Trackenberg – Class of 2012
  • Zaji Zabalerio – Class of 2013
