A Randolph man accused of throwing hot coffee at a Hanover QuickChek clerk is no “violent monster,” his attorney said Friday.

John DeDolce, 42, was charged with simple assault on Aug. 7, 2020, after a clerk told police DeDolce tossed hot coffee on her legs after she asked him to adjust his face mask to cover his nose, reported Morris County Focus.

The clerk canceled DeDolce’s transaction on a self-checkout device and asked him to leave when he refused her request. He then threw down food he was buying, threw the coffee, and left the Ridgedale Avenue convenience store, according to reports. The clerk observed DeDolce’s license plate number and police followed up.

DeDolce’s lawyer, Andrew DeLaney of Morristown, told Morristown Green on Friday his client was “being used as a human vehicle for a political agenda,” portrayed as “a monster frothing with violent intent” over “the most hot button political issue of our current time.”

DeLaney said the painting contractor “threw his items on the ground in frustration, but he never threw nor intended to throw coffee at any employee of QuickChek,” and any coffee that hit the clerk “resulted from incidental splashing.”

DeDolce, the lawyer said in a statement, “would like to make it unequivocally clear: He would never intentionally hurt a stranger doing their job, and any suggestion to the contrary is patently false.”

In addition to simple assault, DeDolce was charged with endangering another person and violating Gov. Murphy’s executive order mandating masks inside stores as a precaution against the coronavirus pandemic.
