Man shot by police was son of former Morris Township cop; Attorney General investigating

The person shot by police Tuesday in Morris Township was a man in his early 20s named Tim O’Shea, sources close to the investigation told Morristown Green.

O’Shea had attempted to take his own life, and was threatening his mother with a weapon, when a Morris Plains police officer tried to intervene, sources said.

It was not clear what type of weapon O’Shea may have had. He was shot twice, fatally, in a neighbor’s driveway, sources said. The incident occurred on Fairchild Avenue, near the border of Morris Plains and Morris Township.

The state Attorney General’s Office announced late Tuesday that it’s investigating the shooting, as required by law for any fatal encounter involving police. The shooting occurred around 4:19 pm, after police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office, which said only that “one male civilian sustained fatal injuries.”

Leading the investigation is the Integrity Bureau within the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.

O’Shea was the son of retired Morris Township Police Lt. Kevin O’Shea, according to sources with knowledge of the incident.

At 5:23 pm, Morris Township police advised the public to avoid Fairchild Avenue because of a “major police investigation.”  There was no danger to the public, police said.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office has referred press inquiries to the state Attorney General’s Office.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.

This story has been updated with information about the identity of the shooting victim, and a statement from the state Attorney General’s Office.

  1. 70% of mass murderS in AMERICA are caused by white people also well educated and no crimal background …….. john

  2. John Of course they will protest this. BLM does protest over all killings by police. The white victims just get less press.

  3. This is a terrible tragedy for all involved. I am shocked at some of the comments involving race, etc. The main issue is as Glenn D wrote that we not jump to conclusions and speculation , we do not know the whole story. My heart goes out to the O’Shea family, friends, and to the police officer.

  4. John you’re are disgraceful. Indeed part of the problem. Your white privilege only allows you to see the distorted view of black people. You are so afraid of accepting the fact the majority of us are decent human beings living profitable lives working hard. Why don’t you go educate yourself. Start with Black Wall Street. That is if your ego can handle progressive and successful African Americans.

  5. Here’s another idea Callie G…read the article closely. The actor was threatening to commit suicide. When someone is in this state, their obviously not in their right mind. Compliance is probably the last thing on their mind. So why don’t we wait until the investigation is complete to see what happened here. All in all it’s a tragedy for the actor, his parents as well as the Morris Plains Officer who shot him. No cop ever starts the day wanting to take a life.

  6. To John I am a child of God first and l am an African American. John All life matters because we are All God’s children. I am praying for comfort for the mother and father of this young man who has lost his life and may he RIP. This was a domestic situation not a situation where someone lost their life due to hatred from one to another because of their skin color, sex orientation or ethnicity. You are entitled to your opinion and l respect all people opinion because that’s your right to voice how you feel. BLM doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter it means that let black life be respected an valued as All other human life. There is an disparity among mankind an human being of all color and ethnicity are admitting there need to be change on how all human beings should be treated. There is violence in all races l don’t condone violence no matter what race is involved. We all have a lot of growing to do l don’t even know you but l pray for you everyday because for me my heart and my God it’s the right thing for me to do. I love you in spite that we may have different views and opinions. Have a blessed day

  7. Will Blm riot over this? Suspect/victim was white so it probably won’t matter. They would rather focus on gang members/women beaters and car jackers like cyprian Luke. Great rallying cry.
