Don’t black people understand that rioting is devaluing the Black Lives Matter movement, and dishonoring George Floyd?
Morristown High graduate Danielle “Bella” Simon (’18) says the person who tweeted that needs to understand a few things. She spells them out in her poem, I Don’t Understand.
‘I Don’t Understand,’ by Danielle ‘Bella’ Simon, video by Bryce Simon:
Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who was unarmed and handcuffed, died on Memorial Day in Minneapolis when then-police officer Derek Chauvin pinned his throat to the ground with his knee for almost nine minutes.
Chauvin and three other officers were fired; Chauvin faces murder and manslaughter charges and the others are charged with aiding and abetting those crimes. All 50 states have seen protests. Many, including one in Morris Township, have been peaceful. Rioting and looting have erupted in Minneapolis, New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
At MHS, Simon served as president of Melanin Minds, the school’s African American cultural club. Now, she is working towards a degree in elementary education, with a bilingual certificate in Spanish, at the University of Maryland.
She writes poetry, she explained, as a way to express her emotions in a healthy outlet, while using her voice to be a “change agent.”
This video was shot by her brother, Bryce Simon (MHS ’16), who is studying entertainment media management and film production at California State University Northridge.
The Simons have been active members of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Morristown.
