One of Morristown’s most famous sons, craigslist founder Craig Newmark (Morristown High School ’71), has given a financial hand to Morristown-based Cornerstone Family Programs.

Cornerstone Family Programs Awarded $10,000 from Craig Newmark Philanthropies for Female Veteran’s Program, Operation Sisterhood.

Cornerstone Family Programs announced it has received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, established by the founder of craigslist, to support their program for female veterans, Operation Sisterhood.

Now in its fifth year, Operation Sisterhood is still the only program of its kind in the state that offers a non-government, community-based approach to providing peer support and holistic options by military women for military women in NJ.

“The female veteran population is on the rise and therefore, more needs to be done to reach them on a very personal level. We know that our hands-on, personal approach is the key to our success in raising awareness and addressing the prevalent issues and barriers women veterans experience during their transition home,” said Elizabeth Myers, program manager, Operation Sisterhood, who has served in the US Marine Corps, Army and New Jersey National Guard.

Although women now comprise over 15 percent of all active-duty forces and over 20 percent of new recruits, they still are constantly overlooked by their own communities, including institutions specifically created to support veterans.

Operation Sisterhood is recognized as a model of collaboration, bringing together human services and healthcare organizations, private sector and the VA to provide community-based outreach, advocacy and peer support for our female veterans and their families.

“We are deeply grateful to Craig Newmark Philanthropies for this generous grant to help us continue this important program of outreach, advocacy and peer support that has given our female vets a voice to be empowered and achieve personal resilience,” said Patrice Picard, CEO, Cornerstone Family Programs.
