Greater Morristown residents have plenty of things to worry about right now. But water quality isn’t one of them, according to the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority, which provides water to Morristown, Morris Township, Morris Plains, and Hanover.

Here’s a statement from the SMCMUA.

Coronavirus and Drinking Water

(Cedar Knolls, NJ)  The Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (SMCMUA), which provides water for portions of Morris County, New Jersey, is writing to update consumers about coronavirus (or COVID-19) and how it relates to the drinking (tap) water supplied by SMCMUA as provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

EPA has issued the message below on its website regarding COVID-19 and drinking water.

The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies. Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low. Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual.

EPA has established regulations with treatment requirements for public water systems that prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water and wastewater. Coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective. EPA is coordinating with our federal partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will continue to provide technical assistance and support, as appropriate.”

SMCMUA has provided the link to EPA’s webpage on its website at www.smcmua.org under Water Quality. In the event that there is an issue with the water supply, SMCMUA would notify consumers as required by both the Federal and State Safe Drinking Water Act.
