Let’s call the whole thing off: Even the library is saying sayonara

Disregard our previous Greater Morristown Weekend Preview.

Virtually every event on it has been cancelled.  We wouldn’t be surprised if the governor cancels the weekend. Happy Friday the 13th in Virusville!

To recap really quickly:

Friday’s Shabbat service at the Morristown Jewish Center is off… as are all other events through March 30 because, unfortunately, someone there has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Folk Project has called off its Friday Open Stage at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship.

Saturday’s Morris County St. Patrick’s Parade is a coronavirus casualty.  And that goes for the annual pre-parade Mass at Assumption Church in Morristown.

If you want to drown your sorrows about the parade, you only can do it 250 people at a time, and only until 10 pm, per an executive order to Morristown bars by Mayor Tim Dougherty. The Laundromat nightclub says it’s shutting down until this virus stuff blows over.

The Mayo Performing Arts Center will be dark for the rest of March. Phyllis Chen’s weekend performances at the Morris Museum’s Bickford Theater aren’t happening, either.

As of 5 pm on Saturday, the Morristown & Township Library will be closed…until at least April 1.

The Winter Farmer’s Market on Sunday in Morristown?  Nope. It’s throwing in the towel for the season, which was supposed to end on March 29.

Likewise, don’t bother looking for Pulitzer-winning author Edward Larson at the Morristown & Township Library (see above.)

No services at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown for the next three Sundays, either. (Keep your fingers crossed for Palm Sunday and Easter.)

The New Jersey Festival Orchestra intended to present an operatic program Sunday at Drew University. But Drew, like numerous other schools, has closed its doors.

Speaking of schools, don’t look for Morristown High School’s production of Into the Woods next week. The Morris School District has sent everyone home through March 27.

Classes are scrapped at the Morris County Art Association for the foreseeable future.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison is taking a long view…it’s postponed its April 18 gala and an April 28 statue unveiling honoring former Gov. Tom Kean.

You can’t even enjoy any municipal fun. Monday’s Morris Township planning board meeting is cancelled.

These scratches only scratch the surface…but you get the idea.

  1. DK – what does a limit of 250 patrons do for a bar that has a capacity for 200?

The mayor is more worried about the business community than the residents.

Hoboken figured this out and acted appropriately, with what I must imagine was a huge pushback from the bar/restaurant owners…

  2. <<Yes because the COVID-19 only comes out after 10 pm at bars with 251 people in them<<

Nice rhetoric. But nobody's saying the virus can count people or tell time. The idea is to limit congregations of people, and to enable social distancing as much as possible. And to encourage this earlier on rather than later.

Don't you think it's better to do your part and help too, rather than rather than leaving snarky, posturing comments?
