Greater Morristown weekend preview: Black History, ‘Rent,’ and the Oscars

Football season is over. But Greater Morristown has plenty of activities to take your mind off that this weekend.

The Morris Museum will explore 500 years of black history. Rent marks its 20th anniversary.  And the Oscars get their due at the Morristown & Township Library.

THURSDAY, FEB. 6, 2020:

The Morristown & Township Library continues its Film Noir series with free screenings of L.A. Confidential (1997) starring Kevin Spacey and Kim Basinger, at 2 pm and 6:45 pm. Light refreshments. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

Morris Arts hosts a closing reception for its Expresiones Latinx I exhibition at the Gallery at 14 Maple, from 6 pm to 8 pm. The  show features works by 21 artists on the themes Nature/Environment; Dreams; Barriers; Love; Dance; Music; Sports; and The Streets. Admission: Free. On the third floor at 14 Maple Ave., Morristown.

 

 


FRIDAY, FEB. 7:

Morning Yoga with Munah Hayes returns to the Morristown & Township Library at 9:30 am. Free. Bring a yoga mat. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

Morristown’s 70 South Gallery celebrates its 25th exhibition, Juxtaposed Manifesto of the States of Matter, with a reception for photographers Judi Benvenuti, Mia Mutascio and student photographer Lily Wieder, at 6 pm.  At 70 South St. RSVP here.

The Troubadour Acoustic Concert Series in Morris Township presents its Valentine’s Day Extravaganza, featuring top performers from the Folk Project, at 7:30 in Morris Township. Admission: $10; children 12 and under, free. At the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road. Snow date: Feb. 14.

 

The Madison Arts and Cultural Alliance presents All You Need Is Love- A Cabaret, featuring Broadway and Off-Broadway performers in an evening of music, comedy, scenes and monologues about love, to benefit the Rainbow Montessori and the Madison Community Arts Center. At 7:30 pm, admission: $20. At the Madison Community Arts Center, 10 Kings Road.

Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center presents the Rent 20th Anniversary Tour, at 8 pm, with encore performances on Saturday. Tickets: $59-$99. At 100 South St., 973-539-8008.


SATURDAY, FEB. 8:

Learn about maple sugaring at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township, sessions at 1 pm and 2:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission: $4, ages 3 and up. Seating is first come, first served. At 247 Southern Blvd., 973-635-6629

The Madison Arts and Cultural Alliance presents Lucky In Love, A Valentine’s Concert, featuring local and professional singers performing favorite love songs with an orchestra, at 8 pm. Admission: $25. At the Madison Community Arts Center, 10 Kings Road.


SUNDAY, FEB. 9:

Grow It Green Morristown hosts the Seventh Annual Winter Farmers Market, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Alexander Hamilton School in Morristown. More than a dozen regional vendors sell everything from pasture-fed meat to winter produce, every Sunday through March 29, 2020. This week,  Farmer Tina will sell vegetable-themed Valentines Day cards; local artist Casey O’Brien will sell some of her work; and Be Well hosts a donation-based yoga class at 10:30.

Morristown’s Bethel AME Church celebrates Black History Month at the Morris Museum in Morris Township, at 2 pm, with its exhibition The Ties that Bind, and a conversation, What Freedom Looks Like: Anchoring African American Identities in Morris County from 1600 to 2020. At 6 Normandy Heights Road.

The Madison Arts and Cultural Alliance presents pianist Thomas Pandolfi in One Singular Night: Tribute to Gershwin and Hamlisch, at 2 pm. Admission: $20. At the Madison Community Arts Center, 10 Kings Road.

The Morristown & Township Library hosts one of its signature events, the annual Movie Awards Mania Party, at 7 pm. Watch the Academy Awards on the big screen, play Oscars Bingo, dress up for Red Carpet photos, and enjoy free refreshments. No admission charge, either!   At One Miller Road, Morristown.
