Cosi, the Boston-based chain known for its flatbread sandwiches, has closed its doors in Morristown.

Employees at the 29 Washington St. restaurant were told at 10 am last Friday that it would be their last day, and that all but 15 Cosi locations were being shuttered, according to a longtime customer.

“Please be advised that this location is now closed,” read a sign posted on the door later on Friday.

Attempts to reach spokespersons for Cosi in Morristown and at corporate headquarters were unsuccessful over the weekend.

The company filed for bankruptcy in 2016, closing 29 of 105 restaurants nationwide and listing debts of between $10 million abnd $50 million, according to reports.

A year later, Cosi emerged from bankruptcy as a private company owned by MILFAM, with 43 company-owned and 30 franchise restaurants in 14 states, the District of Columbia, Costa Rica and the United Arab Emirates.

  1. I was one of the General Manager that oversaw the daily operation. My name is Stephen. I left Cosi last year 2019 in August due to the district manager dysfunctional behavior towards the staff. It was unfortunate that the store closed down since we were doing ok, sales was positive, had a great dedicated staffs. But had a great time meeting tons of people from the courthouse.

  2. Bill – cant you say that for any industry, not just food? If everyone just stopped going to __________, then all commercial real estate they inhabit will be devastated.

  3. More than 50% of the retail stores in downtown Morristown either sell or serve food. If we have a recession or Americans decides to stop eating out the devastation on commercial real estate will be beyond anything Morristown has experienced in the past.

  4. I am always saddened to see a business close. I enjoyed the chain while I worked in NYC and when I happened to be in Morristown.
