From the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Morristown:

The Church of the Redeemer in Morristown will host its 9th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance to remember and pray for those killed in transgender hate crimes on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, at 10:30 a.m.

In addition, an art exhibit will feature the work of transgender artists in the Transgender Day of Resilience Art Project.

“At least 21 black trans women have been killed in the United States this year, just because of who they are,” said the Rev. Cynthia Black, rector of the Church of the Redeemer.

“At a time when white supremacy and hatred is killing people, we are determined that these names will be remembered and that hate will not get the last word.”

Jackie Baras, RN

Two events will mark this year’s TDoR event at Redeemer: A speaker and candle-lighting at the 10:30 a.m. worship service, and an art exhibit. The speaker will be Ms. Jackie Baras, LGBT Health Navigator at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

She also serves as Quality Nurse Manager for PeriOperative Services, Lead Group Facilitator of the PROUDLY ME Education/Support Group at RWJUH and President-Elect of the Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey.

For the art exhibit, 10 trans and non-binary visual artists and poets of color from across the country collaborated to create original artwork to re-imagine Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The project’s goal is to expand the conversation towards honoring and supporting trans people while they are alive. Led by Forward Together, a national women of color-led organization, whose mission is to unite communities to win rights, recognition and resources for all families, the TDOR art project acknowledges how violence disproportionately impacts trans people of color.

Trans artists of color offer their own stories of resistance, hope and liberation. The exhibit will continue through Nov. 27, by appointment.

The Church of the Redeemer, at 36 South St., Morristown, is a Christian liberation community in the Episcopal tradition, serving the people of Morristown and beyond for more than 165 years.

Sunday services are at 8:00 and 10:30 am (8:00 and 9:30 am from Father’s Day through Labor Day). As part of its practice of radical hospitality, the church provides space to Nourish.NJ (formerly known as the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown), Freedom House—an addiction and recovery program, Family Promise, a number of 12-step groups, and the Empty Bowl Zendo.

It founded the Eric Johnson House, a transitional housing program for those living with HIV/AIDS, that operated for 25 years from the former rectory. To learn more, please visit: www.redeemermorristown.org.
