Students from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Drew University joined forces Thursday with local churches, the Borough of Madison and police from Florham Park and Madison for their third annual peace march honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s notion of a “Beloved Community.”

The themes were justice, equality for all, and love, with a nod toward the United Nations International Day of Peace, on Sept. 21, 2019.

Students started marching from the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morris Township and traveled along the Traction Line, a walkway that parallels NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex commuter rail line, to Fairleigh Dickinson University.

From there, students continued to neighboring Drew University, where they were welcomed with music from Drew’s Pan African Choir, led by Prof. Mark Miller.

The procession then marched to Hartley Dodge Plaza at Madison Borough Hall.
Students from all three schools gave speeches, and had the opportunity to register to vote. The short program ended with students and members of the community bowing their heads in silence and praying together for peace.

“I think this was a really great opportunity to be immersed in everyone,” said FDU student Isabella Frango, 21.

CSE student George Vega, 20, said he marched to express hope for a better world.

As she walked back to campus, Drew freshman Abigail Haven, 18, said the event encouraged her to connect with more people in the community.

“I didn’t know originally that the Peace March was today, but … I ended up liking it a lot, so next time there’s a peace march, I’m definitely going to attend,” said  Haven, who photographed the march. correspondent Olivia Yepez is a student at Drew University.
