Morristown to extend cooling center through weekend; excessive heat, thunderstorms forecast

The Morristown Fire House will remain open as a cooling center throughout the weekend, Mayor Tim Dougherty’s office announced on Wednesday.

An excessive heat watch is in effect from Friday, July 19, though the evening of Sunday, July 21; the heat index could top 100 degrees, predicts the National Weather Service.

But first, we must get through tonight, July 17. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect through 10 pm, and a flash flood watch continues until 1 am on Thursday.

The town hall seniors center at 200 South St. and the fire house at 161 Speedwell Ave. are open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm through Friday for anyone who needs refuge from the heat.
