Saying rumors of his demise “have been greatly exaggerated,” Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty expressed gratitude Sunday to doctors he credits with saving his life after he had a heart attack on Saturday.

“I will be discharged tomorrow with a new lease on life, which would not have been possible but for the quick action by the doctors, staff and medical personnel who are responsible for me talking to you today,” Dougherty, 60, said via text message from Morristown Medical Center.

The attack followed a busy day Saturday, which included mayoral stops at the Our Youth Their Future 10th anniversary celebration at the Cauldwell Playground, among other events.

Doctors found a major blockage of the mayor’s arteries and inserted stents, said Morristown First Lady Mary Dougherty, who caught a red-eye flight home from a family function in Arizona.

On Sunday morning Mary Dougherty stood in for her husband at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, reading a proclamation declaring Janet Broderick Day in honor of the rector, who is leaving after a decade to lead a parish in Beverly Hills, CA.

Broderick offered prayers for the mayor from the pulpit.

“I want to thank everyone for their support, especially Janet Broderick, who will be missed by us all,” Mayor Dougherty said.

He added he felt luck “to have such a highly rated, first-class medical facility as part of our community.”

  1. Best wishes to you Mayor D. Take the time to sleep at least a couple of hours a night, perhaps?
