Memorial Day Weekend is all these things. And we are free to enjoy them because of sacrifices by generations of brave men and women in our armed forces.
This holiday, let’s make sure to remember them.
THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2019:
The Morristown & Township Library continues its spring series of Classic British Whodunnits with Murder on the Orient Express (1974) starring Albert Finney. Free screenings at 2 pm and 6:45 pm. At One Miller Road, Morristown.
FRIDAY, MAY 24:
Morning Yoga with Munah Hayes returns to the Morristown & Township Library at 9:30 am. Free. Bring a yoga mat. At One Miller Road, Morristown.
Jonathan Byrd & The Pickup Cowboys headline at The Troubadour (formerly The Minstrel) in Morris Township, with openers The Rough & Tumble, at 7:30 pm. Admission is $10; children 12 and under, free. At 21 Normandy Heights Road.
SATURDAY, MAY 25:
The 33rd annual Memorial Day Parade in Morris Plains begins with a 9 a.m. ceremony at Roberts Garden, followed by the line of march at 9:30 pm. Newly retired Mayor Frank Druetzler, who initiated the parade in the 1980s, will dust off his trademark Uncle Sam suit one more time, as Grand Marshal. Will Mayor Jason Kaar suit up, too? The largest Memorial parade in Morris County promises 88 units, 13 bands, and, if all goes well, a flyover by a KC-130T transport plane. A free cookout, with kiddie attractions, follows at the VFW on Route 53.
SUNDAY, MAY 26:
The Morristown National Historical Park presents a free concert at 1 pm featuring the Maison Trio: Elly Toyoda (violin), Suejin Jung (piano) and Issei Herr (cello) will perform works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn. And the park is open free, too, from 9:30 am to 5 pm. At 30 Washington Place.
MONDAY, MAY 27, MEMORIAL DAY:
The annual Memorial Day Parade for Morristown and Morris Township starts at 10 am at the Township municipal building on Woodland Avenue, and proceeds to the Morristown Green for 11 am ceremonies honoring America’s falling heroes.
The Rockaways and Denville together will mark their 150th annual Memorial Day Parade, starting at 11 am. The parade will proceed from the corner of Beach and Main Streets in Rockaway Borough to the Civil War Monument in the Presbyterian Church lot.
At noon, the Morristown Rotary and the Original Music School present the second annual Original Music Fest, at Ginty Field in Morris Township. Free family fund includes live music and games. Food trucks will sell food. Festivities run until about 3:30 pm.
