The clouds parted long enough on Monday for hundreds of cyclists to accompany Marty Epstein to his final resting place.
Police halted traffic for the pedal-powered procession from Morristown’s Temple B’nai Or, where Marty’s children eulogized their dad with warmth and humor, to Beth Israel Cemetery in Cedar Knolls.
Marty, the founder of Marty’s Reliable Cycle and the Garden State Fondo, died Thursday after a five-year battle with metastatic prostate cancer.
Mourners included the president of Trek Bicycle and owners of a rival bike shop. Many of the 800 people inside the temple wore the blue colors of Marty’s stores. Outside, a news chopper hovered over the scene.
Bill Ruddick, executive director of the Fondo, said the biking extravaganza will go forward in September just as Marty planned– as the biggest and best since Marty launched it in Morristown in 2011.
What would Marty have said about his sendoff?
“‘This is awesome!'” said his daughter, Molly Lyristis.
