MORRISTOWN AWARDED $20,000 TD GREEN SPACE GRANT FOR INNOVATIVE URBAN FORESTRY INITIATIVES IN UNDER-SERVED NEIGHBORHOODS

Morristown receives award funding to improve green spaces in need of remediation.

The Town of Morristown announced Friday that it has received a $20,000 Green Space Grant from TD Bank Group (TD) and the Arbor Day Foundation to support greening and tree planting initiatives in under-served areas of the community.

The 2019 theme for the program is “Innovations in Park-Based Green Infrastructure.”

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, the Morristown Shade Tree Commission will use the funding to remediate Pocahontas Park. Morristown was one of 20 U.S. and Canadian cities to receive a grant.

“It is an immense honor for Morristown to receive this grant,” said Mayor Timothy Dougherty.

“Only a mere tens of municipalities are awarded the Green Space Grant. This essential funding will go toward revitalizing a park that is crucial to the quality of life of our residents and visitors. Thank you to TD and the Arbor Day Foundation for making this possible.”

Remediation work will consist of removing dead, dying, and diseased trees along with a full park cleanup, removal of invasive species, and soil remediation. The end goal is to have a refreshed public space for residents and visitors with the addition of 21 newly planted trees.

“Green spaces play a critical role in creating more livable cities. Not only do they provide environmental benefits, but they also provide social services and economic benefits to cities and the people within them,” said Andrea Barrack, global head of sustainability and corporate citizenship for TD.

“That’s why we are working with the Arbor Day Foundation to support innovative community programs in cities including Morristown that are striving to create a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow.”

“Our goal with this grant program is to help communities not only enrich their green spaces but also enrich lives,” said Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation.

“We’re supporting Morristown in its effort to build awareness about the benefits of trees, educate residents on proper tree care, and lay the groundwork for a greener future.”

TD provides funding for the grants, which are awarded annually for tree planting, maintenance costs and educational activities, and the Arbor Day Foundation administers the program. The

TD Green Space Grant program is a component of The Ready Commitment, TD’s corporate citizenship platform designed to help create a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow.

To be eligible for a grant, qualified municipalities must be within TD’s footprint in the United States and Canada. Priority is given to projects occurring in a low- to moderate-income area of the local community.

For communities applying within the U.S., preference will be given to currently recognized Tree City USA® communities or those interested in becoming a Tree City USA community over the next calendar year.

  1. The Morristown Shade Tree Commission is proud to secure this grant. We secured the TD grant two years ago and was hugely successful in creating two beautiful gardens for MHS and planting 21 trees. We are thrilled to be chosen again and to work with Habitat of Humanity to help remediate the Pocahontas Park. Taking care of Morristown’s trees is an honor and we take what we do very seriously. We are so happy to be supported by Mayor Dougherty and the entire Morristown Administration! Kristin Ace – Chair STC
