Morristown High School has two strong female leads in this month’s production of The Addams Family — and they are best friends.
Senior Nya Federoff and junior Brenna Thornton will alternate shows playing the part of Morticia.
Callbacks were quite stressful for the pair. They both wanted the role yet were very supportive of each other. It all worked out in the end when the cast list came out and they saw their names under the same role.
Morticia is the only character that is double-cast in this production, which runs from March 22-24, 2019.
“The directing team and I really couldn’t choose just one,” says Director Katie Adams.
“We thought why not give them both the unique opportunity to learn and grow from one another, and what a gift it would be for all the audiences that will be attending the show.”
“We make up the two complementary parts of Morticia, the sultry and maternal aspects, and can learn from each other,” Thornton says.
During rehearsals, they “tap in” and out of being Morticia from scene to scene. Cast mates and directors call them “Brya,” along with the running joke in the theater that they are the same person.
Theater brought Thornton and Federoff together. Though they have lived on the same street their entire lives, they only met in 2017 when they were cast as Sorority Girls in Legally Blonde. Their friendship grew as they were cast as Angels last year in Anything Goes.
They have spent a substantial amount of time together tackling the role of Morticia. “This is the only person I would ever want to share a role with,” says Federoff, a student filmmaker whose documentary about aspiring female artists will earn her the Gold Award, the highest honor for Girl Scouts, on March 2, 2019.
