Sunday was not a regular day at the office for Morris Township Police Sgt. Kyle Laauwe and Patrolman Saul Gutierrez.

At 12:22 a.m. they helped deliver a baby girl.

The officers responded to a home on Tikvah Way, where the mother had gone into labor.

Morris Township police logoLaauwe is a trained Emergency Medical Technician and a former member of the police department’s Emergency Services Unit. Gutierrez, hired last July, has answered several emergency calls, Police Chief Mark DiCarlo said in a statement on Monday.

“I am continuously impressed by the actions of my officers every day. I thank them for their commitment and dedication to the community,” the chief said.

The police were assisted by the Morris Minute Men First Aid Squad and the Atlantic Health MICU.

DiCarlo said the baby’s parents still were deciding on a name for their new daughter.
